10 reasons to Switch to a Custom Domain Name

Sharing is simple . . .
Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on LinkedInEmail this to someoneShare on Google+

reasons to own a custom domain name

I did it. I admit it. I was once upon a time a blogspot blogger. I started out with a blog, just for fun while I was freelance writing for Yahoo and other online and print magazines. I know how easy it can be, but I also know that at some point you may want to grow beyond where those types of sites can take you. Once you are ready to take that step it is time for a custom domain name.

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links which are used to support this site and my family. All opinions expressed are 100% my own, based on my own experiences and education.

10 reasons to switch to a custom domain name

  • Increased opportunities to make money. Have you ever wondered why you didn’t get an opportunity you applied for in a network, affiliate company or group? Or even get accepted to some blogger networks? Some have rules that they can’t accept anyone without a custom domain name.
  • You control what people see when they “Google” you. Did you know having a custom domain name can actually make some of your less than complimentary posts, comments, or pictures drop further down in search engines? On the other hand, it increases your presence in search engines as they identify you with your brand and your blog. It also can translate into increased page views – as visitors are more likely to click on a custom domain name link than those which are not.
  • You have control over your online presence. Some people purchase their name as a domain name just so no one else can have it. They don’t plan on using it, but it makes sure that no one else uses it for less than honorable purposes.
  • It’s a tax write off as a business expense. Both your hosting and domain name purchases are tax write offs in the expense column. If you are making any money you know how important those can be, no matter how small.
  • FREE – doesn’t always mean free. It can come with a pretty hefty price. You know all that work you have put into your images and content. You may own it, but someone else (WordPress, Weebly, Google) actually OWNS your site. This means that they in essence own your content. They can shut you down and no one even has to tell you why. All your hard work is GONE.
  • As a blogger your online presence is evidence of your brand. How often have you visited a website and quickly “bounced” off of it because you didn’t think it professional? Because it wasn’t well organized? Unfortunately, not having your own custom domain says that to those who visit your site.
  • You are limited in what you can do – from the types of design you can have to the types of ads you can use. Sure you can depend on sponsored content as your only source of income but why would you? And why wouldn’t you create a website, presence and brand which shows off who YOU really are and what your expertise and interests are?  Do you want to be limited in your business efforts?
  • Customer support. How often have you encountered difficulties on your site and have to spend time looking for how to fix them? And how often have you just given up and let it go or moved everything else around to accommodate the problem. I’m not saying you don’t have site outages or other problems, but when you do have your hosting company, who is quite often your domain name provider can provide you with customer and technical support.
  • Other forms of revenue. Do you have a store? Create printables? Plan on adding e-books, clothing or other branded items to your blogging business? Adding yourname.weebly.com simply is advertising for your free service not for your business.
  • Which brings me to no. 10. Don’t take it personal – but in the online world it’s not considered professional. With a custom domain name you now have a professional business email address in addition to your blog.  If you don’t take the time, effort and money to invest in something as minor as a custom domain name then others aren’t going to consider you a professional blogger- and they may not be willing to invest in you and your skills.  It adds to your credibility as a social media influencer, author, expert or other business owner.

Getting a domain name and hosting service can cost you less than the price of a couple of visits to Starbucks each month depending on your services. I’ve purchased domain names for $1.99.  Purchasing a custom domain name doesn’t have to cost a lot of money and in the end it may even make you much more than you will ever spend on it.

There are many hosting services available both where you purchase your domain name or you can purchase them separately. You can start with “baby” plans and always increase your services to more bandwidth, faster speed, and more image storage when that day comes around. But it won’t come around as long as you let someone else have control over your online presence.

Blogger Spotlight: Jenn Park of Jenn Unplugged

Jenn Park of Jenn Unplugged

I met Jenn Park, writer and owner of the blog Jenn Unplugged, while we both doing a Disney press junket for bloggers. We had an amazing time learning about Halloween Town at Disneyland as well as some of the great planning and creation that goes on in movies and television like Star Wars Rebels, Alex and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day and more.

Jenn blogs about life with honesty and humor, recipes, reviews, her kids, travel and entertainment/Disney. Come see what she has to say about life as a blogger and offers up some advice from her experiences in this interview with New Creative Media.

Why do you blog?

It started as a hobby. I wanted to be able to stay home with my children and earn money in order to help take care of my family, in addition to my husband’s salary. The rest fell into place and I love being “my own boss”.

What is your favorite thing about being a blogger?

The freedom to write and experience things I may not have been able to otherwise.

What is the hardest thing about being a blogger and what you do to deal with those challenges?

Time management and balance. Take deep breaths, make lists and use my planner.

What’s three of the most important things you have learned about social media marketing or blogging?

There is always something new to learn. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Know your worth.

What advice would you like to give to other bloggers?

Be yourself. Blog from the heart. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it, don’t write about it or feature it. Something more fitting will come along at the right time.

Jenn has had the honor of being invited to 3 media trips, 2 being Disney related. She is proud of my site and what it has provided, and continues to allows for and how it provides for her family.

Head over to Jenn Unplugged and find out more about her life, family and travels.

Thanks so much Jenn for taking the time to talk to us today!

blogger spotlight andrea west

Let me introduce you to Ra Shonda Gibson of  the blog Abundant Journeys.  Shonda is a Certified Travel Associate, Certified Luxury Travel Advisor and is in the spotlight this month on New Creative Media. She is to share with us her thoughts and advice about being a blogger.

Shonda Gibson of Abundant Journeys Blog - Far Right

Shonda Gibson of Abundant Journeys Blog – Far Right

I was able to spend some time with Shonda to ask her a few questions about life as a blogger, especially a niche travel blogger. Here’s what she had to say.

Why do you blog?

I blog because of a love of everything travel and luxury living.

What is your favorite thing about being a blogger?

Being able to share my experiences.

What is the hardest thing about being a blogger?

Time! I don’t sleep. (laughter – I know how she feels but I’m working on it).

What’s three of the most important things you have learned about social media marketing or blogging?

1. Always give quality. If you are short on time, don’t post.

2) Give your audience what they want… it’s not about you. It’s about them.

3) Make sure to promote your post. It is not “write it and they will come”. It’s like a social hour… socialize and get the word out.

What advice would you like to give to other bloggers?

Make friends with other bloggers for motivation and camaraderie.

Shonda worked with New Creative Media on one of our Go Houston! Travel Campaigns. Travel with her to Houston as she checks out:

Hotel Sorella – Houston

Royal Sonesta Houston

Texas de Brazil – Houston

Cyclone Anaya

Using the Houston City Pass

Rainforest Cafe – Galleria

I’m GOING! Thrive Blogger Conference

Sharing is simple . . .
Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on LinkedInEmail this to someoneShare on Google+

thrive blogger conference

It’s that time of the year when I start making my travel and conference plans. There are several that I would like to attend and some brand new ones this year that I’m even more excited to share with you! The first new blogger conference for 2015 is Thrive for Bloggers and is being held in The Woodlands, TX.

Here’s what intrigues me about the Thrive Blogger conference:

  • It’s a shorter conference with a party on Friday night and the conference sessions on Sat. You know what that means right?
  • It’s less expensive than some other blogger conferences with a $99.00 ticket price.
  • While I’m an experienced blogger Thrive is offering some sessions that I would really like to learn more about. For example, ever since IZEA made changes to their system I’ve been lost on how best to work within it. IZEA is one of our sessions!
  • Other sessions I’m excited about include Food Staging and Photography and YouTube.  You can find out all the speakers and sessions online and register too.
  • I’m shamelessly stolen this quote from their about page – but of course given proper attribution

Everyone works together as a team to learn how to grow the blogging industry together, and to support each other. When one blogger thrives, all bloggers Thrive!

All the sessions are in one room so I don’t even have to choose. I get to attend them all!

Did I mention it’s right here in the Houston area? I don’t have to spend a fortune to go to this one. Room rates were available at the Hyatt and let me tell you the Hyatt in The Woodlands is absolutely amazing and gorgeous. So grab a roommate and make your reservation.

Did I mention the shopping and dining in The Woodlands? It’s going to be hard for me to get in the car and drive home after the conference because there are so many other fun things to do while there. Hmm, maybe I won’t come straight home!

October writing prompts

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!  Well it is for bloggers, writers and content creators. The major holiday season is upon us and that means we could be busier than every before! Not only do we have our own holidays to plan for but often the work load becomes quite the harvest.  Some may find this time exciting, while others may find it hard to focus. Here are 31 writing prompts for October to help you along your way every day.

  1. It’s Adopt a Shelter Dog month – have you every adopted a shelter dog? Share your experience adopting a dog, from selection to training and special needs that come with it along with the special joys.
  2. Discuss how adopting a shelter dog helps the environment and saves a life. Without adoption many of these animals may be left in the cities to die, and often some of the illness they succumb to can be transferred to other animals. Without out adoption many of these dogs are “put down.”
  3. Interview a dog shelter and find out about their specific needs. Start up a pay it forward campaign and flex your social media muscle for good.
  4. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, share your experience getting a mammogram. Lead by example. Talk to experts in the field, local experts can be an amazing resource in spreading knowledge and information.
  5. Join up with breast cancer awareness opportunities, whether it’s a Twitter party, walk/run or other fund raising/awareness event.
  6. Cookie month – what better time to get those holiday cookie recipes perfected for everything from Halloween to Christmas.
  7. Domestic Violence Awareness Month – Have you been a victim of domestic violence? Do you feel you can share your story?
  8. Write a commentary on the high profile domestic violence going on recently. Could these stories help others?
  9. Compile a list of domestic violence resources available in your area.
  10. Support a local organization with a pay it forward event. Get other brands and blogs involved and make it a big one!
  11. It’s festival season here in Houston, is it where you live? We can celebrate anything from Octoberfest to Hot Sauce. Attend a local festival and share the food, culture, recipes, drink and music. Write a fashion blog? it’s the perfect way to tie in cultural fashion, make local connections and enjoy a day out with friends and family. After all, we have to experience it to write about it!
  12. Oct. 5th is World Teachers Day.  You know all those ideas you have for Teacher Appreciation Week? Now is a great time to bring out your archives and share those posts.
  13. Interview a teacher.
  14. What are some things teachers wish parents knew about teaching?
  15. October brings with it the harvest season. Now’s a great time to bring out some field trips to local farms – great for activities and events for many bloggers or even turn it into a field trip for homeschooling parents. What did the kids learn from the farm visit? What are some things you learned from it? How will it change how you view food? Or grocery shopping?
  16. This month is a great month to also bring out all the decorating posts you have for Halloween and Fall. Not only can you pull out great content from your archives but you can share the items you create this year for your home.
  17. FOOD! With more holidays comes more entertaining. Are you testing out a new recipe to serve at a holiday dinner or party? Write it down and take pictures as you go. After all, when it’s all done you may just have the dream delicious blog post you have always wanted.
  18. Think squash, pumpkin, apples, bananas, cranberries and nuts – when testing out new recipe ideas.
  19. Pumpking carving stencils – it’s not my strong suit but I know plenty of bloggers that do. Why not do a round up and share the blogger love. Inlinkz can help you do it quickly and easily with images too!
  20. Free printables – right now is a great time to show your creative side with printables for everything from getting your home organized to chore charts. Since school is back in session many families may be finding it hard to get back on track with the schedule.
  21. Ghosts and goblins, pumpkins and pies! Bring on the Halloween content – from recipes and decorations to tips for families with allergies or special needs.
  22. Columbus Day – this is were teachers and home schooling moms can really shine! I love doing fun learning activities with the kids and with the holiday we have a day at home. Do you have a great historical activity or game we could do together? How about local writers? Any great activities or events?
  23. Stop, drop and roll but that’s not all. Let’s talk Fire Safety Month – from camping to what to do if there is a fire in your home. Do you have an exit plan? Share it with your readers and let’s get the fire safety conversation heated up!
  24. National Pizza Month means you can work with your favorite pizza brands, restaurants or even share your homemade pizza recipes. Make it a pizza night and get the whole family involved! Host a pizza party where everyone creates their favorite pizza.
  25. National Poetry Day is Oct. 15. Try your hand at poetry.
  26. Are you a bloggers blogger? What projects are you working on right now? Are you growing a social media channel? Learning a new skill? Share your experiences with other bloggers as well as the resources that may help them grow.
  27. MONEY! Now is a great time to share some money saving tips – especially to get ready for the holidays. What are some ways you save money for Christmas or holiday travel? Do you have tried and true methods and tips? Don’t keep them to yourself share them with your readers.
  28. It’s a fabulous fall season! Do you have gardening tips? Maybe fabulous fall flowers to plant? Now it a great time to dress it up both inside and outside your home.
  29. With fall we have cooler temperatures. We may be spending more time inside – or even outside. What are some things you are doing this fall ? Bringing back family game or movie night?
  30. It’s soccer and football season in our household. Why not share how parents and guardians can set the stage for a successful sports season. What did you learn watching your children play sports? Did you volunteer? How can parents get involved?
  31. That also means football season for the adults too! What are some football game day recipes you love? Does your Sunday game day with friends and family really score? What do you do to make that possible?

There’s thousands of more prompts but you are most likely ready to go do some writing of your own and not reading mine! Ready, set, WRITE!

angelique campbell

This month we are featuring Angelique Campbell, The Budget Bandit in our Blogger Spotlight. Angelique will be sharing with us her thoughts about blogging, what she has learned and what she hopes to do in the future. Find out more about this blogger and her blogging journey!

Thank you so much Angelique for taking the time to talk to us today about your blog, The Budget Bandit, a product review, coupons and deals site with frugal living and momma tips. Angelique is full time blogger, momma of 4 (with a hubby who is gone 5 days a week) and a part time gymnastics coach. She has her Masters of Education, and taught elementary and junior high before blogging and is a true believer of frugal living inside and out. She credit this to most like to be the case because she grew up extremely poor!

Why do you blog?  I want to share great deals in tips with other momma’s like me!

What is your favorite thing about being a blogger?  Being able to work from home and still help others!

What is the hardest thing about being a blogger and what you do to deal with those challenges?  The MANY hours it takes sitting at my computer! (Vacation is not an option)

What’s three of the most important things you have learned about social media marketing or blogging?

(1) Being recognized by articles, larger bloggers or media with a link back is one of the best forms of increasing traffic. (2) You can’t rely solely on Facebook (unless you want to pay for it). (3) Open an account in every social media platform out there and try to use them all regularly!

What advice would you like to give to other bloggers?  Be prepared to work harder than you have ever worked before in your life!

Do you have any awards/accomplishments and/or associations you are particularly proud of that you would like to share?   I have been a guess on Rachael Ray, Kansas City Live, Guest Writer for ABC News, and 3 episodes of Extreme Couponing.

Big thanks to this busy blogger for taking some time to talk to us!  Head over to The Budget Bandit, and see what she has to share with you today!

Hispanic bloggers wanted for sponsored campaigns

hispanic blogger opportunities

As a blogger and freelancer, sometimes it seems like we spend as much, if not more time trying to find paid assignments than we do actually doing assignments.  Savings.com is one company I have been working with on a regular basis and now they are looking specifically for Hispanic bloggers to join their program.  See the details below and if you are a good fit, sign up and and start working with them!

Disclosure:  This post contains an affiliate/referral link which is used to support this site and my family. All opinions expressed are 100% my own.

Savings.com is looking for Hispanic bloggers. What does that mean?   They are looking for bloggers who:

  • Writes content geared toward a Hispanic audience either in English or in Spanish.
  • Is interested in writing sponsored posts for merchants and/or advertisers.
  • Writes about any number of topics, not necessarily just coupons, deals and frugal living (although that’s fine too).

You simply sign up with Savings.com and completes the process for the Sponsored Campaigns program (creates a Savings.com account, accepts the Savings.com IO in Impact Radius (IR)).  If you are on Impact Radius already that makes it even easier!

I like that the programs are tailored towards my audience and my content. I also like that Impact Radius offers a variety of ways to get paid – including the recently added PayPal method.  It’s been so easy to find campaigns and opportunities and get paid for them.

Do I get every campaign?  No and that’s yet another thing to link about this program. They select from those who are interested and selections may vary based on your content, your quality or your niche.

If it sounds like a good fit – hopefully I’ll see you there. They have a great Facebook group support group too – so that is a BIG help when looking for answers to questions, supporting the opportunities that come your way and meeting other bloggers.

blogger spotlight andrea west

Join us today as we meet Andrea West of Saving Every Day,  in our blogger spotlight and find out more about her, her blogging and her life.  Andrea blogs about restaurants, recipes and road trips.

Why do you blog?

I have a Journalism degree and it’s a nice creative outlet for me. My day job is more technical so this is for fun. I also like to eat out a lot!

I do too!  Makes a great way for combining business and pleasure.  What is your favorite thing about being a blogger?

All the opportunities to learn about brands and share them with my readers and side income that I bring in. It’s really what keeps me going. Although – being recognized here and there in an elevator is pretty fun too!

What is the hardest thing about being a blogger and what you do to deal with those challenges?

Keeping up with the Jones – a lot of things to take my blog Saving Every Day to the next level requires an investment. I’m just not making enough to really invest a lot into it. I’m going to pick one thing at a time this year – I just bought a fancy camera. Next step will be a “studio” area for shooting food pics – then the money will start rolling in so I can do a site design!

That sounds like fun! I need to set up a dedicated camera area too. When you get yours done, be sure to share your tips with us!  What’s three of the most important things you have learned about social media marketing or blogging?

1. Be yourself – find your voice and stick to it! 2. You have to give people content they are interested in for them to even know you exist. 3. Pinterest is amazing.

What advice would you like to give to other bloggers?

Find your voice. I don’t try to be like every other food blogger – I’m me. I’m a little rude sometimes. I’m HONEST. I don’t LOVE everything. I’m me. Figure out who YOU are – and be YOU. The rest will come.

It’s good advice! Do you have any awards/accomplishments and/or associations you are particularly proud of that you would like to share?

I’ve been #1 on Urbanspoon Cincinnati for a year now! Woohoo!

That’s great that you branch out too! Being a successful blogger isn’t just on our blog but where and when we can contribute to conversations too!

Thanks so much Andrea for taking time to talk to us today.  Good luck on the “studio” and the new design and we look forward to hearing from you again!

You can find Andrea at Saving Every Day to spend some more time with her and her blog.
